Gluten-free Taste Thai Pad Thai Noodles Review

Gluten free Taste Thai Pad Thai Noodles

I saw this in the supermarket and had to give it a try. I do love Pad Thai, and I'm always on the lookout for gluten-free products I can carry with me when travelling. I love to have back up gluten-free meals and snacks when I'm travelling. It helps relieve any anxiety I have about not finding a gluten-free place to eat.

It's been well over 10 years since my celiac diagnosis, and I still miss the spontaneity of eating out wherever looks good, without having to research restaurant options before hand, and then ask the staff about what is safe to eat for a celiac.

Pad Thai box and noodles and sauce packet

Here it is unboxed. I thought since I was at home I would rehydrate the rice noodles in a bowl. The box contains the rice noodles in a packet, the sauce in the foil packet and a foldable fork.

Ok, here the noodles are with boiling water covering them. I probably should have rehydrated the noodles in the box. I think they would have cooked faster. With my in the bowl method 6 minutes wasn't enough. I then added 3 more minutes, still not to my liking, so I put the bowl in the microwave for a minute. Success. Soft and still chewy noodles.

Then I drained the noodles and added the sauce. You get quite a lot of sauce, and it smells lovely.

Here is a closeup of the noodles after mixing in the sauce. They smelt so good. Very satisfying Pad Thai flavour. Not too spicy, but lots of depth. I really enjoyed this instant gluten-free Pad Thai.

As you can see there is a "May Contains" label, and it states it 'may contain wheat'. This may concern some celiac's, but in Canada the "gluten-free" label means the product is safe for celiacs. The product is not safe for someone with a wheat allergy. So, if you have a wheat allergy this product is a no-go for you. If you are a celiac, then as per the Canada Celiac Association statement:

Products with a "gluten-free" claim and a "may contains" (precautionary statement) for wheat, are safe for celiacs. The product must not have any intentionally added sources of gluten, and must test less that 20 parts per million of gluten as a result of possible cross-contamination.

For a more detailed explanation of Canada's gluten-free labelling guidelines here is a link to the Canada Celiac Association's position on ingredients labels and may contain statements.

I feel comfortable with the gluten-free labelling and the may contain statement. You will need to decided your comfort level.

I enjoyed this product and would add it to my travel box.

The "may contains" statements can be very anxiety provoking for some celiacs, and the Canada Celiac Association is advocating for better controls on the use of these "voluntary statements. For more information check out this link explaining the new codex guidelines on making "may contains" statements more consistently and taking in risk as well as allergy.
